"Death of John Knauf"
"At Calla, Monday, May 4th, occurred the death of John Knauf, who for more than a year has been a patient sufferer. The funeral took place Wednesday and was one of the largest in attendance ever held in Green township. Services were held in the Ridge church conducted by Rev. Smith of Austintown and Prof. L.U. Huiln (?) of Greenford. The body was interred in the Ridge cemetery. Mr. Knauf was born in Green township, where he always resided, Oct. 17, 1835, and was over 67 years of age. On Sept. 16, 1860, he was married to Miss Amelia Ewing, and Jan. 26, 1851, they moved to the home where for more that 42 years they resided. Eight children are still living – Mrs. Etta E. Cook, T.L. Knauf, Rosa R. Hendricks, H.W. Knauf, Martha M. Rogers, Arthur H. Knauf, Hugh A. Knauf, and Eunice Knauf. In the death of Mr. Knauf a man of highest character has passed away. He loved his home wherein dwelt all those amenities that make it the dearest place on earth. As a neighbor he was kind and obliging and with his large circle of friends there always existed the pleasantest relationship of harmony and good will. In his business life he exercised that wisdom, prudence and integrity which made his name the synonym of honor. To all his country's interest he was ever loyal and patriotic. He was a firm believer in the Christian religion and a faithful attendant of the church to the interest of which he was always a liberal contributor. In his death the home loses an affectionate husband and devoted father, and the community a citizen whose life has done much to make it brighter and better."
